The European PGA Tour recently announced that Gary Player designed Donnafugata Golf Resort and Spa will host the 2011 Sicilian Open from 17 March 2011 to 20 March 2011. This is the first event of the 2011 European PGA season to be held on European soil and the first major tournament to be played at Donnafugata.

“It is fantastic that the European PGA Tour has chosen Donnafugata to host the 2011 Sicilian Open. Choosing the right course for a golf tournament, especially an Open event, is a difficult task and for the European PGA Tour to show so much confidence in a course that is relatively new is a testament to the team at Donnafugata.” Said Gary Player.

“I am very proud of the work we did at Donnafugata. It was a challenging design because the site is located within a nature preserve and we had to make sure that the course added to the natural beauty of the land. We used native grasses and plants and paid close attention to protecting the existing olive tree groves and ancient rock walls that delineated family property boundaries. Sicily is a beautiful island and a great place to hold an Open championship. I am excited to see how the course plays for the European professionals.” He added.

Donnafugata Golf Resort and Spa is located in the vast Donnafugata fiefdom, now a nature reserve one hour by car from the International Airport of Catania and few kilometers from the city of Ragusa. It features a 5-star hotel and two 18-hole golf courses. Situated amongst pristine beaches such as Marina di Ragusa, Punta Secca and Camarina, and other areas of outstanding historical interest, the Resort is a fantastic point of departure to discover tourist attractions and cultural sites in the area. Several nearby towns, Ragusa, Modica, Ibla, Noto and Scicli, form part of a UNESCO World Heritage site that preserves many remains of the Sicilian Baroque style in a unique atmosphere.
