GolfNet introduces winner of interactive nationwide golf tournament

Pinehurst, NC – August, 17, 2012 – GolfNet, the leading USGA Handicap Index® service provider in North America, announces the winner of the first BMW vTour. Hundreds of golfers across the country competed over four months for a chance to attend the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick in September.

“BMW of North America graciously provided the grand prize that features free air fare, accommodations for three nights at the Sheraton Indianapolis, tickets to the PGA event, and a chance to play the golf course, Crooked Stick Golf Club, the Monday after the final round,” says Daniel Parker, Communications Manager, GolfNet. “All participants received a BMW golf towel and a sleeve of Titleist Pro V1 golf balls.”

The BMW vTour enabled golfers from random locations throughout the country to compete against each other in a handicapped tournament. Golfers played a round of golf at a local course, posted their score online, and waited to see if they qualified for the final round. All scores were adjusted using the Callaway Scoring System to ensure fair play throughout the event.

“We employ safeguards to keep the sandbaggers out of our events,” says Bryan Wilson, Lead vTour Software Developer, GolfNet. “The Callaway Scoring System uses scoring trends within a single round to compute an accurate handicap, enabling golfers of all skill levels to compete on an even playing field.”

The BMW vTour 2012 field included 227 golfers, four qualifying events, and a championship final. Kirk Barfuss, a Parts Manager from Utah, was crowned champion as a result of a tie-breaker.

“I had a blast participating in the BMW vTour. It helped me focus while playing, and, it was fun to see how I stacked up against the competition,” says Barfuss. “The leaderboard, announcements, and banter all take place online. It was definitely different, but a great experience.”
