Sanford, FL – Esteban Toledo became the first Mexican to win on the Champions Tour this past weekend when he sank a par putt with his RIFE Island Series Aruba putter on the third hole of a playoff at the Insperity Championship held at The Woodlands Country Club in Texas.
The 50-year-old Toledo, started the final round seven strokes behind the leader but got off to a quick start when he eagled the opening hole. This was only his ninth start on the Champions Tour and he finished with a 5-under 67 on Sunday to force a three way playoff.
His par putt on the third hole of the playoff sealed the victory on what was ironically Cinco de Mayo, a holiday that marks the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when Mexican troops defeated a French army of Napoleon III, then considered the mightiest military in the world.
“I met Esteban at the final event of the 2012 Champions Tour season in San Antonio,” said Jim Barfield, V.P. of Tour Operations for RIFE Golf. “He picked up one of our Island Series Aruba putters and couldn’t put it down. He said he loved the way the ball came off the grooves on the face of the putter. It’s been in his bag ever since.
