Mickelson’s Victory Sealed with Clutch Pitch Shot During Playoff with Callaway Wedge
CARLSBAD, Calif., July 16, 2013 – In his first win in a regular European Tour event, Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) Staff Professional Phil Mickelson relied on Callaway and Odyssey products en route to a playoff victory. Battling gusting winds in Inverness, Scotland, Mickelson outlasted fellow Callaway Staff Professional Branden Grace at the Scottish Open with a birdie on the first playoff hole. The birdie was carded after a brilliant 50-yard pitch shot that spun back dramatically, stopping inches from the cup. Grace’s runner up finish was his best of the year, and came after switching to Callaway’s newly released FT Optiforce™ Driver earlier in the week.
Along with a new Mack Daddy™ 2 Wedge, Mickelson used a Callaway X Hot™ Phrankenwood prototype, X Hot™ 3Deep Fairway Wood, X Forged™ Irons, an Odyssey Versa™ #9 Putter (white/black/white) and a HEX Chrome+™ golf ball to shoot rounds of 66-70-66-69 to capture the win. The victory marks the 48th professional win for Mickelson worldwide. He averaged 307 yards off the tee at the Scottish Open and hit 82 percent of greens, all while facing high winds for most of the competition. Ultimately, it was his unforgettable pitch shot on the playoff that set up a tap-in birdie for the win.
“It was a shot that I’ve practiced many, many times,” Mickelson said. “I was able to pull it off when I needed it.”
Callaway last week launched its new Mack Daddy 2 Wedges, designed by Roger Cleveland. The wedges feature larger, 5V Grooves for better spin. They are available in three sole grinds for more versatility from everywhere. Additionally, golfers can get “Wedgeducated” by Roger Cleveland in a series of instructional videos on Callaway’s website.
Golfers can also learn more about the new Mack Daddy 2 wedges from Callaway’s Director of Fitting & Instruction, Randy Peterson, and Chief Club Designer, Roger Cleveland in this episode of Callaway Talks, and watch Peterson demonstrate how to hit the 50-yard pitch shot off a hard pan lie (like Mickelson did) in this Instructional Video.
